Hi again, John:
We’re continuing our series highlighting the amazing work our alumni are doing all over the country. Today, we’re talking with Alani Bagcal, who is an organizer with Planned Parenthood in Hawaii. Alani participated in our "We Will Not Be Muted" training series and our first-ever Advanced Leadership Cohort that was built by and for women of color.

Q: In what ways has re:power’s training supported you?
A: Being able to feel free in my brownness and having the opportunity to be trained by BIPOC women is something I have never experienced before. It was really helpful to hear trainers talk about connecting with audiences through a racial justice lens. As a woman of color, I’ve learned that what I’m asking for in terms of basic human rights isn’t irrational or out of reach. Through the WOC cohort I have felt more empowered to make that clear in my organizing and talk strategy about how to build power.
Q: When have you felt most proud of your work?
A: Celebrating and centering BIPOC voices and making sure there is an equity piece in the way we organize and take action is what I’m proud of. And to do this confidently, whereas I may have felt intimidated to do so before, I’m now realizing those feelings were a result of white supremacy.
Q: What does power look like to you?
A: Being able to use my authentic voice, being confident about what I achieve, and not having to be validated in order to be heard. Being able to move people to action and being able to build power through the legislative process so people have equitable access to the resources they need and deserve.
Alani and her peers represent the future of our movement and we’re so proud to be supporting organizers, activists and leaders like her. Can you give $50, $100, $250 or more [[link removed]] to make sure we can continue to train folks like Alani and support the leaders our movement needs to succeed?
Thanks so much!
In solidarity,
Karundi
