Send a message of hope and thanks to a Mercy Corps team member ▸ |
When hurricanes Eta and Iota hit Central America, Mercy Corps’ Guatemala team was there, distributing emergency supplies. After the explosion in Beirut, we helped small businesses survive a fractured economy. And in 2020, our COVID-19 response has reached over 15 million people across the globe. And the reason I’m truly proud to be a part of the Mercy Corps global team? Because behind every act of service are the smart, compassionate individuals who risk everything to help. Team members like these: Hilal (above) coordinates operations and emergency response for our teams in India and Thailand. He says, "I dreamed of becoming a humanitarian when I was a child and would see humanitarian aid workers in my neighborhood reaching out to the people and impacting their lives in a positive way." Send a message of gratitude to team members like Hilal. Sonal (above) has supported Mercy Corps’ responses around the world, including: tsunamis in Sri Lanka, the crisis in Yemen and earthquakes in Haiti. Send a message of hope to team members like Sonal. This is a team member whose name we can’t share. Due to security risks in Syria, they must remain anonymous. Like 85 percent of our team members, including myself, this person is from the country where they work. While this is part of our commitment to global change through local impact, it also means that many of us are experiencing the same crises as those we serve. Here in my home country of Nigeria, a land with more than 250 ethnic groups and 500 languages, communication and respect for diversity is essential to our work as a Mercy Corps team. We ensure that 100,000+ people every month have enough food to eat, and we construct shelters for displaced persons affected by the conflict in northeast Nigeria. I’ve seen my fellow team members face threats from insurgency groups, and navigate insecure roads to reach distant communities, just to help people rebuild their homes, businesses and lives. And the same kind of courage is happening in more than 40 countries where we serve. Our nearly 6,000 team members work side by side with people living through poverty, disaster, violent conflict and the acute impacts of climate change. Before 12/31/2020, please send your message of gratitude, hope or encouragement to Mercy Corps team members across the globe. Messages will be compiled and shared with our country directors, to help their teams welcome in the new year. Your message can let them know that their work is not taken for granted. Although we may never meet, we know you are there beside us as we fight to help people in need build a better tomorrow. In gratitude for your ongoing support, Communications & Learning Specialist Mercy Corps Nigeria Grace believes "the opportunity to connect and interact directly with our participants shows me just how important our work is as humanitarians." She coordinates all communications, helping her team and the people they serve to tell their stories. |
