John,
This week, I am making one of the biggest transitions of my life, from Founder and President of New American Leaders to its forever champion and supporter! I am turning a page but NAL is always going to be a chapter in my life’s book, one that I will come back to for reminders and reference time and again.
NAL has been an integral part of my life for the last decade—a community, a family, purpose, inspiration. Under its auspices, I became encouraged about our democracy, as so many of our alumni stepped up to run for office and become progressive champions from school boards to Congress.
At times, I also became discouraged, as I watched how people like us are asked to fit into a system that was not designed for us. In good times and bad, our work has lifted me, reminded me that we bear both the trauma and the resilience of our ancestors, that we are the product of their wildest dreams.
Our work as New American Leaders and New American Leaders Action Fund continues to be the most critical in this moment of democracy building and racial reckoning, and I hope we can continue to count on your support as we head into a new decade. [[link removed]]
I’m thrilled that Sara Le Brusq, our COO, will serve as Interim CEO. Her authenticity, enthusiasm, and commitment are exactly what the organization needs right now. Over the next few months, a search committee of staff and board will shepherd in a new era of leadership that will ensure that we continue to build a democracy for and by us all.
And while I may no longer serve at NAL professionally, I remain close at hand to offer a listening ear, a comforting shoulder to cry on, or a strategizing session.
I am counting on you to walk with the NAL team [[link removed]] into a brighter and more hopeful year, and another decade of growth. Thank you for being part of our movement.
