John,

While many of us are anxiously anticipating a new presidential administration, too many are neglecting to acknowledge that real change happens at the local level -- and things are not looking good.

Republicans have had the upper hand on controlling state legislatures since 2010, and they currently control a majority of the 98 partisan legislative chambers across states. Every year, these offices are making policy decisions on issues like abortion, gun control, police reform, and health care that directly impact our daily lives.

Not only have we failed to flip state chambers, but we’ve failed to bring in new voices to offset the thousands of well-connected white men who have dominated state politics.

In 2020, there were only 2,162 state legislators who were women out of over 7,000 possible seats -- that’s less than a third of state legislators, and only 552 of those women were women of color. Together, we can change that. We’ve made it a goal to elect a record-number of progressive women to state legislatures in the next cycle, women who will fight for families, reproductive justice, commonsense gun reform, and affordable health care at a time when we need it most.

But John, to do that, to create a government that looks like the people it serves, we’ll need to start early. We’ve calculated that we’ll need to raise $25,000 before the start of 2021 in order to expand our efforts to recruit and elect more women to the state legislature.

As a grassroots organization, we’ve always relied on the support of people like you to accomplish great things, and we know that there’s power in a shared hope for change.
