POLITICO: “A federal judge in California [last week] slapped down the Trump administration's latest effort to limit legal immigration, vacating new restrictions on H-1B high-skilled foreign worker visas that were expected to affect a third of applications to the program.”
This is a win for the AAPI community, friend. The vast majority of the 600,000 H-1B visa recipients in the U.S. are from India and China -- and Trump tried to make them casualties of his “Americans first” attitude, claiming pandemic job losses as an excuse for his “emergency” xenophobic policies. In reality, the administration had been floating these visa restrictions for years before they used COVID-19 as an excuse to strike.
Luckily, a federal judge was able to see through Trump’s lies. And not only that, the bipartisan Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act -- introduced by Senator (and future VP) Kamala Harris -- passed the Senate by unanimous consent the very next day, paving the way for even more AAPI immigrants to receive green cards. There couldn’t be clearer evidence that Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric is finally on its way out of our federal government.
However, Trump still has many weeks left in office to wreak havoc. And the idea that immigrants steal jobs, and are therefore to blame for the economic damage the pandemic has caused, won’t leave with him -- in fact, it’s what so many of his supporters believe. You know that it’s actually Trump and the GOP’s mismanagement that has caused this devastation and suffering in our country -- but, unfortunately, not everyone is like you.
Please, friend, if you believe that immigrants make us stronger, that discrimination has no place in our country, and that Americans deserve better than xenophobia masquerading as economic aid, donate now to take a stand with us.
