Welcome to the Number of the DayDecember 15, 2020Yesterday, the Electoral College formally confirmed Joe Biden as the winner of Election 2020. However, 29% of the nation's voters continue to believe that Donald Trump was the legitimate winner of this year's presidential election. That total includes 63% of Republicans, 24% of independent voters, and 3% of Democrats.[1] Additionally, 17% still believe that Trump will eventually be declared the winner and serve a second term. These figures have changed little since Election Day.[1] This makes 2020 the second consecutive presidential election in which nearly a third of voters do not believe the elected president was the legitimate winner. Those who continue to believe President Trump actually won the election are in many ways the mirror image of those who believe that Hillary Clinton won in 2016.[1] Additionally, this is the 9th consecutive election in which no candidate received more than 53% of the vote. That's the longest such stretch in the nation's history. It highlights the fact that 21st century America remains deeply divided in political terms. However, 76% of voters believe that American society is far less polarized than American politics.
