Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has always prioritized special interests over those of the American people, but this year he’s taken it to new heights of callousness. For the past six months, he has been blocking coronavirus relief because he continues to insist that any new bill include a clause shielding corporations from liability for protecting their employees and customers from COVID-19.
Including the kind of language McConnell wants would make it hard for workers to ensure protection from employers who put them in harm’s way by not following widely accepted COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
Even though the House passed additional relief in the HEROES Act back in May, McConnell has REFUSED to negotiate in the Senate – while millions of Americans continue to struggle financially, and hundreds of thousands become infected with or die from COVID-19.
Two dozen coronavirus relief programs will expire within weeks, state and local governments continue to experience extreme financial strain, efforts to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine are underfunded, and health care costs associated with COVID-19 testing and treatment continue to rise. McConnell’s decision to prioritize corporate relief over the needs of his constituents and the nation is unconscionable and inexcusable.
Right now, Americans are looking to Congress to provide them with the urgent assistance that they need during the worst coronavirus surge the United States has yet seen. We must send a message to McConnell: immediate financial relief for Americans is non-negotiable!
