Hi John,
I wanted to check in with you about my 'F' rating from the NRA -- and the work I'm doing to keep firearms out of the wrong hands and keep our communities safe.
Recently, I met with the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force to begin building our strategy to take on gun violence in the 117th Congress, which is the second leading cause of death for children in communities throughout the nation. While we have passed several gun safety measures in the House, our bills have been held up in the Senate. My colleagues on this committee and I know that we cannot wait any longer.
One of the most recent pieces of legislation I have introduced is the Stop Online Fraudulent Sales of Firearms Act. Right now, online gun sellers using digital marketplaces, including social media, have found loopholes in tech companies’ terms of service that otherwise seem strict on firearm sales. With this bill, we'll crack down on fraudulent gun sales and make our communities safer. So far, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Everytown for Gun Safety have backed my bill -- and it's been introduced in the Senate.
In the House, you can count on me to continue to fight to keep our communities safe from gun violence, because you and I both know that thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need change.
Thank you for standing with me as I advocate for policies like this one -- I’m proud to have an NRA target on my back.
I couldn't do this work without you.
Best,
