The fur ban comes amidst ongoing news that COVID-19 has spread to mink fur farms in 11 countries, including the United States and, most recently, Canada.
Over 200 people in Europe have become sick from a mink-related strain of the illness. Overcrowding and filthy conditions on fur farms exacerbate the spread of disease. Farmed mink and raccoon dogs are especially susceptible to catching the virus from humans.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreaks on fur farms, numerous countries are ending mink production. Denmark is killing its entire mink population - 17 million mink - to stop the spread of the virus. France will be banning mink farming by 2025, Ireland has planned to kill all farmed mink, Hungary has banned fur framing of mink foxes and ferrets, and the Netherlands has changed the date of an existing fur farming ban from 2024 to 2021.
Although LCA strongly believes all fur farming should be banned on the basis of animal cruelty alone, the emergence of COVID-19 on fur farms places new urgency on the situation. Now more than ever is the time for a global fur ban!
