Eight years ago, twenty first-graders and six educators were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Those children would be in high school today if they had lived. As a parent, I cannot imagine the heartbreak of their families, friends, and community.

When Sandy Hook happened, we already knew that gun violence was a crisis, and we didn't need any more proof. But suddenly it happened. Twenty bright-eyed, innocent children gone. Six smiling, hard-working adults gone. At first, it seemed that this staggering loss could finally bring us together as a country to meaningfully address gun violence.

But the families of Sandy Hook are still waiting. The tragic story of gun violence in America continues.

We have made some progress in Congress, with your support. But the National Rifle Association and many of their Republican allies in Congress have opposed reasonable safeguards for too long. And they've been aided by a complicit Trump administration.

Fortunately a new day is near. With a Biden/Harris administration, we can finally move forward with common-sense changes to address our nation's gun violence epidemic.

We can pass universal background checks, which work to address gun violence. We can keep guns out of our schools. We can make sure domestic abusers don't have access to firearms. We can make sure that 26 kids and educators cannot be gunned down in the span of five minutes. We can implement a national strategy that saves lives and honors those we have lost.

Let's make 2021 the year that we changed the course on gun violence. Let's make 2021 the year when enough finally meant: Enough.
