As electors in the Electoral College cast their votes today, I want you to take a second to think about how much the American political system has evolved over time.

In its infancy, only white men who owned property were guaranteed the right to vote. Over time, through organizing, amendments, and legislation, we’ve moved closer to realizing the ideals of democracy and equal representation that our country was founded on, especially when it comes to enfranchising women, and Black and Brown Americans. But we still have a long way to go.

One concrete way we can make our democracy more representative is changing the way we elect a president. If we learned anything from this past month (and the past four years), it’s that we must fix the Electoral College. It’s deeply undemocratic and effectively disenfranchises millions of Americans who live in safe “red” or “blue” states, while amplifying the power of small, largely white states.

The solution? Enacting a ‘one person, one vote’ system through the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. We’ve created an explainer page that breaks down what’s at stake and how we win -- read now and help spread the word:

Most of us believe that every American deserves an equal say in our democracy, but it’s time to take meaningful steps towards a solution.

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement between states that says electors will pledge their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote, regardless of the outcome of their state. This would fix the Electoral College, giving power back to the American people and ensuring greater representation for Black and Brown voters.

Help us put the Electoral College system as we know it to rest. Read up and share the next steps for making NPV a reality.
