Week of December 14, 2020

The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real— it's surging to record levels in Los Angeles, the US, and the world.
We need to be extra vigilant and mitigate the risks of infection, particularly for those who are older or who have pre-existing conditions. For the sake of our collective health, please remember to wear a mask when you leave your home, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently. This pandemic has shown us that the health of one is the health of all so we all need to take responsibility for our common well-being.
There are some easy ways to safely stay connected to the chapter, such as: signing-up on the front page of our website to receive our weekly newsletter, checking the calendar on the site for upcoming virtual events, and joining DSA-LA’s Slack.
In solidarity,

The Fight For Racial and Economic Justice: A Virtual Discussion with Darrick Hamilton, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Symone Baptiste, Olúfémi O. Táíwò, and Bianca Cunnigham
|
Wednesday, December 16th @ 5:00PM
|
Join the Democratic Socialists of America Fund, Dissent magazine, The New Press, DSA’s Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus (AFROSOC), Haymarket Books, and DSA’s Democratic Socialist Labor Commission (DSLC) for the next installment in an ongoing series of virtual discussions based on the book We Own the Future: Democratic Socialism—American Style. This month’s discussion will focus on Darrick Hamilton’s chapter on “A Three-Legged Stool for Racial and Economic Justice.”
Amidst an unprecedented pandemic and in the face of a racist police state, we must chart a new course. In We Own the Future: Democratic Socialism—American Style, leading thinkers and activists come together to examine the democratic socialist history of the United States and how we might achieve a world where every human being is guaranteed a life of safety, health, dignity, and even joy, free from the commodification of basic necessities. The chapters of this timely and urgent volume tackle climate change, foreign policy, socialist governance, reparations, and more.
Our event on December 16th will be framed by the chapter’s discussion of racial and economic justice. What is the democratic socialist case for reparations? How do we fight for it and other economic components of racial justice?

One-on-One Organizing Conversation Training
|
Wednesday, December 16th @ 6:00PM
|
Growing our movement means asking all DSA members to commit to talking with people in their network about growing a movement for the working class in Los Angeles.
But how do you have a successful 1-1 conversation? The Political Education committee invites DSA-LA members for a training in the art of the one-on-one organizing conversation where you’ll learn and practice how to have a successful conversation that moves people to action.
In this first session, we’ll go over the basics of a successful one-on-one organizing conversation, practice the conversations together, then attendees will be asked to put their skills to use using the 1-1 conversation model.
If you’re an organizer in DSA Los Angeles, this is an essential skill that takes practice, so we invite you to join us for this important training!

Art & Socialism: Feels Good Man (2020) Screening and Discussion
|
Thursday, December 17th @ 7:00PM–9:30PM
|
How does an image, a symbol, a gesture get twisted round to mean something entirely different from how it was intended? How are they used for the purposes of causes, even the most intensely repressive ones? Feels Good Man, released earlier this year, looks at the weird and well-known saga of Pepe the Frog, cartoonist Matt Furie’s relatively neutral comic book character who, during the ascent of Donald Trump, became an emblem of the alt-right. Join the Art & Socialism subcommittee for a viewing of this critically praised film, and a discussion with filmmakers Giorgio Angelini and Arthur Jones after!
(Covid is cutting deep into the livelihoods of independent filmmakers everywhere. Therefore, though this event is free, we are asking comrades to seriously consider donating to the filmmakers’ PayPal: [email protected])
