News From The Week Of September 16 - 20, 2019

Friend:

If you’re anything like me, there’s a good chance you intend to or you’ve already binged on “The Family,” Netflix’s documentary series based on and featuring author and executive producer Jeff Sharlet’s best-selling book. The series exposes the shocking political influence of a fundamentalist Christian organization called “The Family,” which has woven itself into the highest levels of our government and international affairs.

The theocratic vision of “The Family” represents an existential threat to the principle of religious freedom, which rests at the center of our nation’s founding. No one has done more to expose their organization than Jeff Sharlet. For that, we should all be grateful.

And that’s why I’m so pleased that Jeff Sharlet will be AU’s featured speaker at our 2020 National Advocacy Summit!

At the AU offices, our staff has been watching “The Family” together each week, enthralled by Jeff’s groundbreaking reporting, and we’re so excited to have him at our summit to speak to AU volunteers and supporters directly.

I’ll leave you with one more piece of great news: 92,437. That’s how many public comments AU and our coalition of allies generated in opposition to Trump’s proposed Department of Labor rule that would allow religion-based employment discrimination. Thank you to everyone who took action with us!

With hope and determination,

On Constitution Day, Resolve To Defend A Vision Of Religious Freedom That Doesn’t Foster Harm:
Severing the tie between religion and government led to a great flowering of religious diversity. Unfortunately, our grand experiment stands in jeopardy today as some people continue efforts to redefine religious freedom, converting it from a device to protect individual rights into an instrument to oppress others.
