John,

Eight years ago today, a shooter walked into Sandy Hook Elementary and within four minutes, shot more than 154 bullets with a military-style assault weapon, killing 20 children and six educators in their classrooms.

This should have been the last time a massacre like this was allowed to happen. It should have been the last time any family drove their child to school only to never be able to pick them up again. It should have been the moment we banned assault weapons.

But instead, here’s what happened: Months after this tragedy, Mitch McConnell and the NRA’s bought-and-paid-for politicians blocked common-sense gun safety legislation that would have saved lives. Because of them, it's still easier to buy a weapon of war than it is to buy cough medicine in most of the country.

As a gun violence survivor myself, I’m appalled at the inaction we've seen from our leadership. From Orlando to Parkland to Las Vegas, each new tragedy is a stark reminder that we could have taken action, that Mitch McConnell is prioritizing the gun lobby over our lives.

But now, gun safety champions Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are headed to the White House — and for the first time in years, we're on the verge of tangible change in this country. That’s why, in honor of the victims of Sandy Hook, I’m personally asking you to join Brady in demanding the Biden-Harris administration ban assault weapons in its First 100 Days so we can prevent senseless gun violence and save lives.

I fight every day — and Brady fights every day — to make sure no family feels the pain and loss that too many in our country suffer. But since the federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004, mass shooting deaths have increased by 347%. That’s why assault weapons need to be banned.

And we now have someone going to the White House who has the will to make that happen. Joe Biden will take action on the gun violence epidemic and prioritize banning assault weapons — but only if we hold him accountable to saving lives.

So, on this tragic day of remembrance, will you join me and recommit to making sure we ban assault weapons, once and for all? Please, before our 11:59 p.m. deadline, take a moment and sign our petition to ban assault weapons and save lives!

We’re on the cusp of making sure gun violence doesn’t devastate families like mine and those from Sandy Hook. But we need grassroots supporters like you to help us drive bold action and demand that our moment becomes a reality.

It’s up to us,

Liz Dunning
Vice President of Development, Brady
