The Georgia Secretary of State’s office has begun an investigation into the New Georgia Project, a voter registration organization, for allegedly trying to register voters in other states.
Their single piece of flimsy evidence? A tweet featuring a postcard supposedly found in New York City.
New Georgia Project CEO Nse Ufot denies the allegations, and says the group hasn’t even been contacted by the Secretary’s office: “I have no idea what they are referring to. It’s almost ridiculous, but it’s very serious.”
We’re not afraid to call this ploy what it is -- a last-minute attempt at voter suppression. They’re not trying to protect the integrity of the vote. They’re targeting groups that were trying to register voters of color, and they’re trying to tarnish the reputations of founder Stacey Abrams and former leader Raphael Warnock before the special elections while they’re at it.
ASPIRE is committed to fighting these despicable attempts at stifling the voices of Americans. In the presidential election, Black women and AAPI voters turned out in droves to flip Georgia blue -- and now we’re supporting groups working on turning out voters of color for these tight Senate races. But at this critical moment, we’ve run low on funds, and we’re losing momentum.
