Friend: We don’t have to tell you that COVID-19 has wreaked havoc throughout the 70 countries where we work. We don’t have to tell you that it’s led to more than 1.5 million deaths worldwide and continues to overwhelm hospitals. That’s because we’re all living through the new reality brought on by this pandemic.
But we want to make sure you know about some of the other devastating consequences of COVID-19 in the places we work.
This pandemic continues to strain already fragile health systems in conflict zones and other low-resource settings around the world, and the most vulnerable groups—women and children—are suffering even more because of it.
Since the launch of our initial COVID-19 response last January, Friend, MSF’s medical teams have seen firsthand the pandemic's impact on routine and essential care—especially for the vulnerable communities we serve.
Fears of transmitting the novel coronavirus have placed many childhood vaccination campaigns on hold, creating dangerous immunity gaps and allowing vaccine-preventable diseases to spread. Resources for important malnutrition and malaria programs have often been diverted, leaving many children at increased risk.
Then there are countries where sexual and reproductive health services were not considered to be essential medical care, or where strict lockdown measures limited access to the maternal health projects mothers rely on MSF for.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the prices for personal protective equipment and other medical supplies are volatile. The costs shown here may not reflect the final purchase price paid by MSF.
