"The Electoral College was necessary when communications were poor, literacy was low, and voters lacked information about out-of-state figures, which is clearly no longer the case."

Rouzer Among Republicans Backing Texas Attack on Democracy Republican David Rouzer was among 126 GOP members of the U.S. House of Representatives who last week signed on to a futile attempt by the Texas Secretary of State to overturn the 2020 Presidential election by throwing out the votes in four battleground states won by Joe Biden over Donald Trump. In fact, seven of the nine Republicans representing North Carolina in the House signed an amicus brief in the case whose demands were swiftly and unanimously rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday. Trump supporters have filed dozens of legal actions seeking to keep the defeated President in office, and almost all of them have been laughed out of court. North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein was among a series of Democratic officials filing briefs of their own to preserve the vote in the states being attacked. Pennsylvania's Attorney General Josh Shapiro called the suit "a seditious abuse" of the courts. “Texas’s effort to get this court to pick the next president has no basis in law or fact,” Shapiro's brief said. “The court should not abide this seditious abuse of the judicial process, and should send a clear and unmistakable signal that such abuse must never be replicated.” In a Facebook post, Rouzer claimed the Texas lawsuit and other challenges to the election were designed to help "restore faith" in our election system. In fact, the lawsuit was a direct attack on the right of voters to choose their elected officials. See a News & Observer article on this issue here. Beasley Won New Hanover By 4,999 votes, but Forced To Concede As Chief Justice
North Carolina Chief Justice Cheri Beasley conceded the election to Justice Paul Newby on Saturday morning, according to WRAL.com. She released a statement sharing her thoughts on the transition. “Today, I called Justice Newby to congratulate him on winning the election for Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. I offer my very best to him and his family as he moves into that new role." At the time of her concession, she trailed Justice Newby by 401 votes, or less than 5 votes per North Carolina county.
New Hanover supported Chief Justice Beasley from the start. She was the keynote speaker at the 2019 Unity Banquet and in 2020 she won New Hanover by 4,999 votes. Her results were consistent with Joe Biden, who won New Hanover by 2,807 votes, Governor Cooper, who won New Hanover by 10,249 votes, Attorney General Josh Stein, who won New Hanover by 4,472 votes and Supreme Court candidate Lucy Inman, who won New Hanover by 2,381 votes. The New Hanover County Democratic Party represented the Beasley campaign in a machine recount, a hand recount and an election protest. In the end, none of those efforts were sufficient to change the result, and her concession reflects that sad reality.
Chief Justice Beasley shared her enduring gratitude for her volunteers, staff and supporters. "Their impact will echo far beyond a single year, campaign, or election. For that, and so much more, I am grateful," she wrote.
With Beasley's concession, Republicans have won all eight of the statewide judicial elections in North Carolina.
As COVID-19 Infections Continue to Spread, Governor Cooper Calls for Restrictions
Governor Roy Cooper and NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen announced that North Carolina will begin a Modified Stay at Home Order after a rapid increase in North Carolina’s key COVID-19 trends. Executive Order 181, which requires people to stay at home between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., took effect Friday and will be in place until at least January 8, 2021. The Order requires restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, personal care businesses and more to close at 10 pm. Travel to and from work; to obtain food, medical care, fuel or social services; or to take care of a family member is exempted.
Secretary Cohen also provided an update on North Carolina’s COVID-19 County Alert System map. The number of red counties (critical community spread) has more than doubled since November 23, up to 48 red counties from 20 red counties. There are now 34 orange counties (substantial community spread), as compared to 42 orange counties from the previous report. With today’s report, more than 80 percent of the state’s counties fall into the red or orange tier. New Hanover County is fortunate to fall into the yellow tier, which means that at present, New Hanover is among the 20% of counties with the least community spread in North Carolina. Please remain vigilant so that we can maintain this distinction, by wearing your mask, waiting 6 feet from others in line and frequently washing your hands. Vaccines are coming, but they are still months away for most people.
