MAGA has turned to secession after SCOTUS shot down a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the results of the presidential election. 

Allen West, the chairman of the Texas Republican Party, released a statement calling for states to secede in the wake of the Supreme Court decision.

And State Rep. Kyle Biedermann - a Republican representing the greater San Antonio area since 2017 - announced plans to propose a referendum on the state seceding from the U.S.

"The federal government is out of control and does not represent the values of Texans," Biedermann wrote in a Facebook post.

"That is why I am committing to file legislation this session that will allow a referendum to give Texans a vote for the State of Texas to reassert its status as an independent nation. #Texit"

West's remark drew swift condemnation, including from Republicans:

“I believe @TexasGOP should immediately retract this, apologize, and fire Allen West and anyone else associated with this. My guy Abraham Lincoln and the Union soldiers already told you no,” tweeted Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a frequent Trump critic.

The electoral college meets at noon today in most state capitols to cast votes solidifying Joe Biden’s victory.

SCOTUS Denies Texas Election Lawsuit

The Supreme Court on Friday unanimously denied the election lawsuit filed by Texas and supported by 17 attorneys general from Republican states. 

The suit aimed to prevent electors from Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin from casting their votes in the Electoral College.

The plaintiffs hoped to force the Court to hear the case by framing it as a constitutional issue between two or more states, which the Court has exclusive “original jurisdiction” over.

The Court denied the state of Texas’s effort to file their original jurisdiction complaint “for lack of standing under Article III of the Constitution” because:

“Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections. All other pending motions are dismissed as moot.”

Senate's Stopgap Spending Bill 

The Senate on Friday passed a one-week continuing resolution (CR) to avoid a partial government shutdown at midnight and extend funding through next Friday.

Congress now has until midnight on December 18 to either provide government funding for the rest of fiscal year 2021 or pass another short-term funding extension to prevent a shutdown.

The government funding battle will be one of several major issues Congress hopes to resolve next week before adjourning for the year.
