Vivek Murthy, the co-chair of Joe Biden’s coronavirus task force, has called a national lockdown to combat rising COVID numbers “a measure of last resort.” Our failure to commit to a full lockdown in the spring continues to have consequences.
It’s well-established that under the Trump administration’s leadership, our COVID-19 response has been beyond abysmal. Over the past few months, we’ve seen almost 16 million confirmed cases and nearly 300,000 Americans die.
Because of the way Trump has butchered this response, we’ve experienced what it feels like to have our government abandon us. And now, we may have to take the most drastic of measures once President-elect Joe Biden and his Cabinet assume office. The fact is, we must return to being a nation that listens and values the expertise of scientists.
