Dear friends, supporters and believers in the First Amendment,

It is my distinct honor to extend a personal invitation to the Poynter Institute’s Bowtie Ball, a celebration of journalism where we will recognize the careers of Katie Couric and Norman Pearlstine. Our 2019 gala will take place on Saturday, November 2 at St. Petersburg’s premier waterfront venue, the Vinoy Renaissance Resort and Golf Club.

This year is of particular significance to Poynter as we honor the accomplishments of Katie Couric, the first Poynter alumnus to receive our Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism. Couric attended ethics training for reporters at the Institute in 1988. We are looking forward to welcoming Katie back to Poynter and St. Petersburg.

Many of you know Katie Couric as a trailblazer in broadcast and digital journalism with a remarkable ability to connect with her viewers. Couric was co-anchor of the Today Show on NBC for 15 years before going to CBS and becoming the first solo woman anchor of a nightly news broadcast. The move made her the highest paid journalist in the world, shattering the news industry’s glass ceiling.

The Poynter Institute will also honor Norman Pearlstine, executive editor of the Los Angeles Times, with the 2019 Distinguished Service to Journalism Award. Among his many leadership positions, Pearlstine served as executive editor at The Wall Street Journal, executive editor of Forbes for the West Coast and the Pacific, editor in chief of Time Warner and Time Inc., and chief content officer at Bloomberg L.P.

Norm Pearlstine is one of the smartest, most creative editors in America and his brilliant stewardship of so many of the nation’s prestigious newsrooms is unparalleled. We are pleased to recognize Norm’s contributions, which reflect the power and possibility of great journalism.

A limited number of VIP and general admission tickets are available. We wanted to give you the first opportunity to secure tickets for this year’s gala. We will promote the event more widely in August. Please note that we quickly needed to create a waiting list for last year’s ball honoring Lester Holt, and we anticipate the same interest with this year’s program.

Proceeds from this fundraising gala support the work of the nonprofit Poynter Institute, which includes the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership ([link removed]), News University ([link removed]), PolitiFact ([link removed]), the International Fact-Checking Network ([link removed]) and MediaWise ([link removed]).

Poynter strengthens the skills of journalists and better connects citizens to the work of journalism in service to democracy — which will be of paramount relevance as we strive to be an informed electorate heading into the 2020 presidential election.

If you’re interested in exploring the advantages of Bowtie Ball sponsorship, please contact my colleague, Wendy Wallace, our director of advancement, at [email protected] or call her at (727) 553-4311 for details.

As always, we deeply appreciate your ongoing support of Poynter. I hope to celebrate journalism with you at this year’s Bowtie Ball on November 2.

Warmest regards,

Neil Brown
