Our hearts are heavy.

On Thursday, December 10th, Brandon Bernard was executed by the United
States Government after being sentenced for his involvement in a crime
when he was 18. He was 40 years old. 

Over the past 36 hours, we’ve mourned this murder at the hands of our
government and our thoughts are with Brandon’s family. But it’s not
enough, we need to demand action and justice. We must abolish the death
penalty.

The Trump administration has three more federal executions planned before
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris take office.

co-sponsor H.R. 4052 introduced by Rep. Ayanna Pressley — which will end
the death penalty on the federal level?

It’s unacceptable for any elected leader in this day and age to support
the death penalty. That’s why Alexandria signed on as an early co-sponsor
of this bill.

State-sanctioned murder is not justice and it never will be. The death
penalty is a devastating tool of oppression and it has no place in our
society.

Since its inception, the death penalty has been marked by racial bias,
wrongful convictions, and disproportionate impacts on the most vulnerable.
It is cruel and ineffective at protecting public safety. It is racist and
wrong.

It’s no surprise then that the Trump administration resumed the death
penalty after a 17-year hiatus – making Brandon’s the ninth federal
execution since Trump took office. Despite enormous pressure to stop the
execution, Trump declined to act.

It is the responsibility of Congress to act as the moral conscience of our
country and listen to the majority of Americans who are demanding an end
to this cruelty. Every letter helps put more pressure on members of
Congress to support Rep. Pressley’s legislation and end the death penalty.
