The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent has sounded the alarm on the long-term impacts of Donald Trump’s dangerous refusal to concede power.
“What Republican voters think, or say they think, about who really won matters less than the fact that, as a consequence, they actively want their elected representatives to subvert our democracy and keep Trump in power illegitimately.”
We’ve seen growing attacks on our democracy across the country -- all for one man’s ego. In Pennsylvania, pro-Trump protesters stormed the houses of GOP elected officials demanding a recount. In Michigan, armed protesters chanted “stop the steal” in the state’s capital. And election workers in Georgia have received death threats for just doing their job.
While these tantrums might appear harmless in the short-run, they spell disaster for the future of our democracy. If Republicans were so quick to throw out any semblance of democracy just to keep a racist wanna-be dictator in power, who’s to say they won’t do it again when our defenses have been spent?
The fact is that Republicans continue to make gains because of their extremist agenda, not in spite of it. We need to be prepared.
We’re doing our best to strengthen our democratic institutions, advance legislation that will put everyday Americans first, and condemn the GOP’s incessant support of Trumpism. But we’re a grassroots movement, and grassroots donations have dropped off after the election, mostly because Americans falsely believe that the work of rebuilding our democracy is done.
We need your help. We need people to stay engaged. Because Democratic civic apathy is exactly the reason why Republicans think they can get away with anything.
