I dread this time of year, John. It used to be my wife Mary's favorite.

She would decorate our house for weeks before Christmas. She'd set out red-and-green plaid tablecloths, wrap garland around the bannisters and hang wreaths on the doors.

But now, Christmastime is almost too painful to bear. Every day that leads up to Dec. 14 is another haunting reminder that she was murdered while trying to save the kids at Sandy Hook Elementary that terrible day. Every holiday tradition that we used to love just makes us miss her even more.

I can't help but think about how excited she would be to wrap presents for her two granddaughters and put them under the tree. Mary was so looking forward to doting on her future grandchildren – but they never had a chance to meet her. We, as a family, continue to celebrate the best we can, for our granddaughters, because Mary would expect nothing less.

While nothing I do can ever bring Mary back, I can still do everything in my power to protect more children from gun violence in her honor. But to expand our lifesaving work to prevent the next tragedy, we must reach our critical $750,000 fundraising goal by tomorrow – and we're still very short. Please, I'm personally asking: Will you donate right now to help us save precious lives from gun violence?

Please give $10, or as much as you can, to Sandy Hook Promise right now. Every dollar of your tax-deductible gift will go toward preventing the next tragedy and protecting more children from gun violence.

I still miss Mary each and every day – and every holiday season without her is as hard as the last. Our family, our daughters, our granddaughters – we were all robbed of the chance to make more memories with Mary. But I like to think she is proud of the work we're doing to protect children like the ones she gave her life to save.

Thank you so much for all that you do to make this work possible. It means more than I could ever express.
