Good morning friend,
This week, 80-year-old Mavis Eccleston was found not guilty
[[link removed]] of murdering her terminally ill husband, Dennis, in a high profile "mercy
killing" case.
Dennis and Mavis attempted to end their own lives together. Dennis died two days
later in hospital and Mavis, 80, made a full recovery following treatment.
This shocking case highlights just how absurd the current law is, which
criminalises acts of love.
The family are "grateful and relieved" the jury recognised that compassion is
not a crime, but the damage has been done. Since Dennis’s death the family has
been through a terrible 18 month ordeal, worrying the whole time that having
already lost their dad to cancer, they might now see their mum imprisoned. This
can't go on.
This didn't need to happen. There is a better way.
Compassion should not be a crime, but under the UK’s broken laws, it is.
What we need is a robustly safeguarded law that provides choice and control to
dying people who want it.
Until the law changes, we will continue to see tragic cases like this. Can you send a message of support
