We’ve won! The Prime Minister has announced that the UK will end public investment in new climate-wrecking oil and gas projects overseas.
Dear John
We’ve won! The Prime Minister has announced that the UK will end public investment in new climate-wrecking oil and gas projects overseas. This is massive news. And you should feel proud to be part of the movement that helped make it happen.
Throughout 2020, tens of thousands of us called on the government to stop the funding of fossil fuel projects abroad. And today – on a day that marks the 5-year anniversary of the signing of the historic Paris Agreement – our sustained pressure has paid off.
This is now another historic day. But you probably won’t be surprised to hear that the fight isn’t quite over.
Just a few months ago Boris Johnson signed off up to £900 million of taxpayer funding to back a vast gas project in Mozambique [1]. Today’s announcement is too late to stop that decision, but our legal team is challenging it in court. With your support we hope to win there too.
The government also said there'll be some exemptions, so we’ll need to watch them closely to make sure they don't sneak through some other climate-wrecking projects.
There’s plenty more we’d like to see the government do before it hosts the next UN climate change conference in Glasgow in 2021. We need it show real climate leadership over the coming months, and go much further than it did in its recent 10-point green plan [2].
Today shows that together we do have the power to secure bolder action to beat the climate emergency.
Before I leave you to enjoy today’s victory, can I ask you to consider setting up a monthly donation to help secure more wins, if you haven’t already, and if you can afford to during these difficult times. Your generous donations make moments like this possible and allow us to challenge dangerous decisions like the funding of the Mozambique gas project.

A final thank you for all your support. We could not have done it without you.
Best wishes,
Rachel Kennerley
International climate campaigner
PS. If you want to set up a monthly donation over the phone, we'll be back at our desks and ready to take your calls on Monday morning.
