Dear John,

Today is the anniversary of the 2019 General Election.

It was a sad and difficult day. But that should not detract from the brilliant campaigning we did during the election, and all the progress we have made since.

And we must never forget that 7 out of 10 votes were wasted in that election due to the UK’s antiquated electoral system.

Internationalist parties gained more votes than pro-Brexit parties – but the first-past-the-post massively distorted the public’s will.

That’s why we’re asking you to take part in Make Votes Matter Christmas campaign. They’re asking everyone to send a Christmas card to their MP calling for more proportional representation.

Many MPs have told us that individual, handwritten correspondence have an even greater impact than online messages or emails.

Click the button to learn more about how to take part in the campaign, what message to include and why this country needs proportional representation. It’s an easy and impactful way to fight for equal votes and a fairer electoral system.

Best for Britain asked voters and political parties alike to work tactically and overcome an unfair electoral system in the last general election.

Despite our best efforts, internationalist parties could not work together in the way that nativist parties did. As a result, the Conservatives were able to secure a huge majority.

Until we see systemic reform, we will always be on the backfoot, fighting against the odds.

Without fundamental reform of our electoral system, power will continue to be concentrated in fewer and fewer places. Only people living in certain swing constituencies will have a say in this country’s future.

If you want to bring electoral reform back on the political agenda, click the button to find out more about the Make Votes Matter Christmas campaign.

The fight for equal votes and the fight for internationalism are linked. As we near the end of the transition period, we must work to overcome the causes of nativist politics, including an outdated unrepresentative democratic system.

Together, we can make the UK a more open, fair and inclusive society.

Best wishes,

Cary Mitchell,
Director of Operations, Best for Britain
