We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.
John, More than 800,000 people in Illinois have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Our hospitals and healthcare facilities are struggling to handle the current surge. Working people and communities of color are bearing the brunt of the suffering, and thanks to GOP Senators who will not lift a finger to help them, there is no end in sight. Servers, cashiers, gig workers, bartenders, home health aides, factory workers, and other working class people were denied basic worker’s rights before COVID hit. But now these workers are on the frontlines of the pandemic without basic workplace protections. They can’t afford to stay at home, and they can’t do their jobs remotely. These workers are disproportionately from Latino and Black communities - they are getting sick and dying at alarming rates. There are simple solutions to this dilemma. Adequate PPE. Less crowded workplaces. Paid sick leave. But all of these solutions cost money, and greedy corporate executives refuse to put people’s lives ahead of their profit margins. The richest people in the United States became $845 billion wealthier during the first six months of the pandemic. To them, the workers who make them astronomically wealthy are just numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s on us to fight for the rights, dignity, and well-being of the workers who truly make this country great. Onwards, Team Chuy |
