John, let’s call it what it is: state-sanctioned murder.

Last night, Brandon Bernard was executed by the United States Government in Indiana for a crime he committed over two decades ago as a teenager. He was the youngest person to receive a death sentence in over 40 years.

This is not justice. We’re thinking of Brandon and his family — the system failed them. We cannot allow this to continue. We must abolish the death penalty once and for all.

The death penalty is not only unjust and cruel, but historically racist. The process was against Brandon from the beginning, with concealed evidence and a misled jury — including five jurors who no longer stood by the verdict of a death sentence.

Hundreds of thousands across the nation joined the lead appellate prosecutor in calling for Donald Trump to commute his execution to life without parole, but we were ignored.

We refuse to allow more state-sanctioned murder. We refuse to allow mass incarceration to define us. We refuse to let our country be content with a racist and unjust criminal-legal system.
