** Day Laborer Outreach
------------------------------------------------------------

"With your continued support, this past Saturday out Day laborer Outreach Team was able to provide lunches, hygiene items, socks and ‘Know Your Rights’ cards to 65 day laborers in our San Diego county. With every visit, we continue to learn about different challenges the day laborers face through this pandemic. It has become even more difficult to find work as less contractors are seeking workers to the continuous harassment they face.

We appreciate your willingness to donate and allow us to continue being a level of support to the day laborers. Well continue to adapt and find new methods that will help these workers thrive in their field and their well being. Thank you!"

** Shelter Aid
------------------------------------------------------------
After over 20 years of using the same beds, we got Ejército de Salvación a brand new set of mattresses. Thanks to your support, we were able to purchase 20 mattresses to give our migrant friends and families a serious upgrade.

Although we have not been able to visit our supported Tijuana shelters as often, we have taken this time to rebuild, furnish, and help the directors enhance their shelters. With your help, we are doing everything we can to make sure our migrant friends are cared for. Gracias!🖤

In addition to this, when you donate to our Shelter Aid program, you help pay for food, rent, utilities, water & so much more!

** Water Drops
------------------------------------------------------------
11/28/20 Water Drop

With temperatures dipping below freezing on multiple nights in the past month, we have focused priority to leaving winter supplies in some of the coldest areas that we regularly cover.

In addition to water and food, we leave packs that include hand warmers, beanie, socks, gloves. Additionally, we leave layerable clothing such as thermal shirts, flannels, and light sweatshirts.
The coldest areas are usually the most remote and dangerous. The need to provide these items is crucial for reducing pain and discomfort, hypothermia and even death.

While the pandemic has surged, we are setting even stricter guidelines for our team members to ensure safety of everyone, and minimize any possible exposure to Covid-19. With almost 40 weeks since the first stay at home order in March, we have not had one case related to anyone coming out to our drops.

These stricter guidelines will be reducing the amount of team members who are going to be coming out, and we are already seeing our numbers start to shrink down. Since we still need to be getting the same amount of supplies out as with a larger group, our wonderful team members have put in the extra work to make our mission continue.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to show up on a regular basis. Thank you everyone for reaching out about volunteering, your support and understanding during the pandemic. As soon as it’s safe for us to start taking larger groups, we will. Please stay tuned to our social media accounts and our weekly newsletter.

For any questions about Water Drops or our Water Drops during Covid, reach out to Water Drop Program Co-Director James Cordero, [email protected].

** Familias Reunidas
Bond Program
------------------------------------------------------------
We are so excited to enter the weekend having freed one person from detention through our Familias Reunidas Program this week: Marla, a 38 year old Ghanan asylum seeker who had been in Imperial Regional Detention Facility for over 3 months.

When we started this program in January, we could have never imagined it would free so many, and reunite so many families. Although this year and this administration have put up so many roadblocks, Marla’s freedom and every other person we have bonded make everything worthwhile. We could not maintain this work had it not been for all of your organizing, fundraising, and continued support. Thanks you for helping us save lives.

We need your help to get more migrants like Marla out of immigration prisons. The support and donations we have received in the last few months have helped over 65 migrants. But we are running low are tapping in to the last of our funds and we need your support to continue helping mothers, fathers, and loved ones who are still detained. All donations make a difference no matter the amount, and every dollar is spent towards getting someone out of detention!

** More than 1,000 migrant children in US government custody have tested positive for Covid-19
------------------------------------------------------------
By Priscilla Alvarez

"(CNN)More than 1,000 migrant children in US government custody have tested positive for coronavirus since March, according to the federal agency charged with their care.

In total, there have been 1,061 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases among unaccompanied migrant children in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a federal agency run by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Of the 1,061 cases, 943 children have recovered and been moved from medical isolation, according to the agency.
Currently, 118 children have tested positive and remain in medical isolation, though none of the children have required hospitalization."

** Undocumented immigrants far less likely to commit crimes in U.S. than citizens
------------------------------------------------------------
By Chris Barncard

"Crime rates among undocumented immigrants are just a fraction of those of their U.S.-born neighbors, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis of Texas arrest and conviction records.

Compared to undocumented immigrants, U.S. citizens were twice as likely to be arrested for violent felonies in Texas from 2012 to 2018, two-and-a-half times more likely to be arrested for felony drug crimes, and over four times more likely to be arrested for felony property crimes, according to a study ([link removed][UNIQID]) published by University of Wisconsin–Madison researchers today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

With new access to Texas’ computerized criminal history data for more than 1.8 million arrests over six years, UW–Madison sociology professor Michael Light ([link removed][UNIQID]) and co-authors Jingying He and Jason Robey — who were both UW–Madison graduate students — were able to directly calculate the rates at which U.S.-born citizens, legal immigrants and undocumented immigrants were arrested for a range of felony offenses."

** California farmworkers hit hard by COVID-19, study finds
------------------------------------------------------------
By Kara Manke

"Many farmworkers who plant and harvest our food are forced to live and work under conditions that are ripe for transmission of COVID-19. During the summer harvest season, coronavirus outbreaks popped up across the nation among farmworkers in agricultural communities, including many in California ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

In a white paper published online today ([link removed][UNIQID]) (Wednesday, Dec. 2), public health researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, detail preliminary findings from the first long-term study on the prevalence of, and the risk factors for, COVID-19 infection among California’s agricultural laborers.

The paper reports that between mid-July and November 2020, 13% of the 1,091 Salinas Valley farmworkers enrolled in the study tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. In California as a whole, only 5% of the population has tested positive between the beginning of the pandemic and late November.

By the end of October, roughly 20% of farmworkers recruited for the study tested positive for antibodies to COVID-19, indicating prior infection. These figures are far higher than estimates of approximately 1% in the San Francisco Bay Area population at large from studies led by the Centers for Disease Control ([link removed][UNIQID]) and by other UC Berkeley researchers ([link removed][UNIQID]) during the spring and summer."
