John,

My heart breaks for Brandon Bernard, his family, and the continued
existence of the barbaric system that took his life.

He was the youngest person in the United States to receive a death
sentence in nearly 70 years. For a man to be executed by the state for
something he was involved in as an 18 year old — and spent the rest of his
life atoning for is absolutely gut-wrenching. It's even more horrific
because we know the death penalty is unjust, unethical, and racist.

State murder is not justice. Period. And yet the next planned execution is
only hours away.

The question I’m hearing a lot now is how do we finally end this cruel
practice.

I’m proud to report that Real Justice District Attorneys have been making
real progress locally banning death sentences. Leaders in San Francisco,
Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, and Philadelphia have
already made commitments to not seek the death penalty under their tenure.
Larry Krasner even challenged Pennsylvania’s death penalty in court.
Through their example, there’s been momentum building to end death
sentences on the federal level.

Once Joe Biden takes office, he will have the power to end this heinous
practice. We need to make sure he commits to ending the death penalty in
the United States on Day One.
