Hi Friend
--
Did you
think we'd slow down when we reached 50 ratifications of the Treaty on
the Prohibitions of Nuclear Weapons? No chance – here's what just
happened this last week:
- On 4th December, Zimbabwe signed the
Treaty
- On 9th December, Niger signed the
Treaty
- And just a few minutes ago, Benin
ratified the Treaty!!
This means
that we have now 86 signatures and 51 ratifications
of the TPNW and the momentum for the treaty is growing as we are
preparing for it to become international law on 22 January
2021.
Right now,
we are planning to make sure that this historic day doesn't get
unnoticed. Thanks to our generous donors that contributed funds to our
work in 2020, we have been able to set up a fund to provide financial
support local partner organisations that will organise events and
actions to mark this occasion. Through our supporters, we will be
exciting activities in Germany, Japan, Australia, Argentina, United
Kingdom, Norway, United States, Burundi, and many more.
But now we need your help to make
sure that this treaty makes a difference beyond its entry into
force.
Even before the pandemic,
governments have been cutting funding for civil society and
disarmament work. We expect the coming years will only get more
difficult for us to secure funds to do this work. So we rely on
committed individuals like you to step up and make this campaign more
powerful.
On #givingtuesday, we saw an
amazing response from many supporters. But we need an additional 75
people to make a monthly recurring donation to ICAN by the end of
December, will you be one of them?
Set
up a monthly donation here
We of course also welcome and
appreciate regular donations, you can make one here.
Thank you for all that you do,
Beatrice Fihn
Executive Director International Campaign to
Abolish Nuclear Weapons
PS - If you cannot make a donation at
this time, we completely understand. Please consider forwarding this
email to a friend or family with a personal note telling them why you
support our work and would love for them to do it too.
