John, I don’t need to tell you the stakes of winning this runoff, flipping Georgia blue, and taking back the Senate, because you already know that. Instead, I’d like to tell you about who I am and why I’m running for Senate.
I grew up in the housing projects of Savannah with 11 brothers and sisters. I was the first in our family to graduate from a four-year college. Eventually, I went on to earn a Ph.D. and was called to Martin Luther King Jr.’s pulpit to serve as the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Republicans want you to believe that people like me aren’t supposed to become U.S. Senators. And yet, here I sit writing this letter to you, on the verge of becoming the first Black Senator ever from Georgia, and the first Democratic Senator in 20 years.
Sadly, the Georgia where it’s possible to go from Kayton Homes to Dr. King’s pulpit is slipping through our fingers -- millions of young Georgians are being crushed by the weight of student loan debt and many can barely afford the cost of prescription drugs.
I’m running against a former Wall Street executive who is now the wealthiest member of Congress. She’s poured millions of her fortune into taking me down and buying this seat, and she’s probably going to pour millions more.
That’s why I’m asking for your help. I don’t have millions of dollars to spend on this seat. I have you: a grassroots community of passionate activists who believe, like me, that someone who understands what it means to struggle, whose currency isn’t money but faith, love, and a devotion to justice, is the best person to represent us in Washington.
If you believe in that kind of America, then I need your help. If we don’t fight for it, it will disappear.
So please, John, will you chip in what you can to take back the Senate for the people?
