While House Dems Work for the People, Trump Steals from the Military

Whether it's his constant tweeting, or being on track to spend more than 340 million in taxpayer dollars from hundreds of days of playing golf at his own golf resorts, it's no secret that President Trump has developed a reputation of being one of our "laziest" Presidents ever.

Meanwhile, Democrats in the House have been busy at work, passing legislation that voters in Colorado and across the country want passed! Let's take a look at all the work that's gotten done thanks to Team Blue!

Since Democrats took control of the House, under their leadership (and the leadership of Colorado's Democratic Congressional Delegation), here is what has gotten accomplished. House Democrats have:

But wait, there's more! Democrats just introduced ambitious legislation to bring down the cost of prescription drugs.

Why haven't these bills gotten anywhere? Simple:

Thanks to Moscow Mitch and Comrade Cory, all of these bills have been blocked -- including universal background checks.

Simply put, Democrats are working for the American people. Meanwhile, what has Trump done lately?

Well, remember how on the campaign trail, then-candidate Trump repeatedly boasted that Mexico was going to pay for his immoral border wall? About that...

You'll notice Colorado's own Peterson Air Force Base at the bottom right. As a reminder, when Cory Gardner flipped and flopped earlier this year before ultimately declining to vote for a resolution that would block Trump's fake national emergency, he claimed that he had gotten "assurances" that Colorado would be spared from military cuts.

As the Denver Post's editorial board eloquently put it, Gardner failed:

We think it’s unfortunate Gardner can’t defend Colorado and the U.S. Constitution at the same time, or even one at a time, or just one or the other.

USA Today's editorial board piled on this week, coming out with a scathing editorial against Trump's action that mocks the Constitution:

These are among 127 military construction projects whose $3.6 billion in funding will be raided to help pay for Trump’s wall. All of them were deemed important and worthy of congressional appropriations, approved by both chambers of Congress and signed into law by the president. And then Trump took their money away.
...
Taking military construction funds to finance a project that Mexico was supposed to pay for is an abuse of power and an insult to America's service members.

We couldn't agree more.

Prop CC: End TABOR's Stranglehold on Colorado

This November, voters will have the opportunity to end TABOR's strangehold of Colorado by voting "Yes" on Proposition CC.

What is Prop CC?

Each year, Colorado is only allowed to spend an amount of money that falls under the TABOR cap, which is a constitutional limit on spending. Prop CC is a ballot measure that, without raising taxes, would allow Colorado to retain the revenue we currently bring in to be invested in:

Why is this Important?

Colorado spends $2,703 less per student than the national average, ranking below some of the poorest states in the nation, including West Virginia and Mississippi. In Colorado, more districts have moved to four-day school weeks — 111 out of 178 — than any other state. That can be an invisible tax on parents and families who must adjust work and child care schedules as a result. With Prop CC, we can make community colleges and trade schools more affordable, giving students the skills they need to thrive in Colorado’s booming economy -- without raising taxes!

Why is this in the Dispatch?

After a vote by the CDP's executive committee, the CDP is now supporting this move to invest in our schools and our roads and bridges.

Join the High Fivers Club!

"What's the High Fivers Club", you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?

Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!

If you haven't given to the CDP yet, here's a few simple reasons why we're asking you today:

  • The CDP is the central base that supports volunteer recruitment, training candidates, and helping county parties win elections. While the DNC provides some limited funds, the reality is it is up to us to raise our own money so we can support Democratic candidates running for office in Colorado.
  • The CDP is neutral in primaries -- but once the Democratic nominee has emerged, we connect our vast network of volunteers to them so they can knock on more doors than the Republicans.
  • Elections and candidates come and go, but the CDP remains. We provide continuity so candidates don't have to reinvent the wheel every cycle.

Volunteer of the Week: Bruce N.

As the ballots were counted on November 4th, 2014, I watch in horror as someone named Cory Gardner beat incumbent Senator Mark Udall. I knew that I hadn’t worked hard enough, and now it was too late.

In 2016, I really upped my game and committed to Hillary’s campaign against Donald Trump. I started in July, worked many hours, took leadership responsibility and got my first VAN ID. We won the state for Hillary. But, the day after the election, the campaign vanished. Office dark and my VAN ID deleted. Whoa. Federal campaigns are phantoms.

But the Boulder Dems were still here. I joined the County Party as an Area Coordinator and later became Co-Team Lead. In 2017, Morgan Carroll won election to the Chair of the Colorado Dems. I’m so glad to be part of her turnaround of the Colorado Dems. Colorado Dems are not going away.

Images are burned into my being. A little girl in a red dress, crying while her parents were detained by ICE. Children locked in cages by the U.S. government.

In 1942, 120,000 Japanese Americans including my mother and father were imprisoned by the U.S. government. They were accused of no crime and had no hearing, but a toxic mixture of racism, politics and greed sentenced them to prison. They lost their homes and farms during their four year captivity.

No one spoke up for them except the brave governor of Colorado, Ralph Carr. Alone, he welcomed the Japanese Americans to Colorado.

Governor Carr is my inspiration. I will stand by innocents imprisoned by ICE. I will not look away. I will work to shut down those for profit prisons. I will work to make Cory Gardner a one term Senator.

Rural Spotlight from Shelia: Lake County

Right in the middle of Colorado and a little to the west is the beautiful Lake County. Lake County is the 4th smallest county in Colorado with 384 square miles of mountains. Lake County has Chaffee County to the south, Park County to the east, Summit County to the northeast, Eagle County to the northwest and Pitkin County to the west. Leadville is the county seat of Lake County and the only municipality.

Historically Lake County has been a great Blue strong hold. Today it is the hard work of the Lake County Democrats that have helped it stay that color. Tracey Lauritzen is the chair and does an amazing job keeping the Democrats working on the Blue Wave. There are approximately 1,579 registered Democrats, 836 Republicans, 1,708 Unaffiliated and 57.11% had their ballots counted in the 2018 election.

Lake County is home to Mt Elbert, the largest peak in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Range, which is recorded to be 14,439 feet. There are also Ghost Towns to investigate in Climax and Oro City. With Twin Lakes and the many trails, including the Colorado Trail, and scenic byways, like Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway, Lake County offers visitors a large variety of recreational opportunities. It is a great place to visit and a beautiful place to take a hike.

Wednesday, September 25, 2019, is the next Colorado Democratic Outreach stop. It will be at 6pm at 83 Nancy’s Place, Frisco CO 80443. Please join CDP Staff members and Democrats from Summit, Eagle and Lake for an exciting evening of information to include voter registration, messaging, important dates and a ton of information to help us win in 2020. You can also check out the Lake County Colorado Democrats on their Facebook page or email Tracey Lauritzen [email protected] for more information about the Lake County Democrats.
