Friend,

Today and every day, I stand with the Spokane Democrats -- but it really matters today.

On Wednesday, a man entered the Spokane County Democrats HQ and threatened to bomb the building. Fortunately, the building was evacuated before anyone got hurt. But the man started a fire that has led to significant damage to the office.

All across the country we've seen the terrible consequences of hateful and violent rhetoric. And unfortunately, more and more frequently we are seeing this rhetoric turn into actual violence. So while we're relieved that nobody was hurt in Spokane, the damage to property and the psychological toll are immense.

I want to be clear about this: Absolutely no one should be the target of violence for their beliefs. This is the culmination of years of a national narrative that has fueled the flames of hatred and divisiveness, and we cannot stand for it.

Every elected official everywhere should condemn this violence. Too many have faced threats of violence since Election Day, including leaders in Michigan and Georgia. We were warned last week that "someone's going to get killed" over this -- and this week proved again how real that possibility is.

Today, while we condemn the violence, we can also stand together to help in Spokane. The Spokane Democratic Party needs our help to get back to work. If you'd like to show your support for them in this time of rebuilding and healing, please join me in making a donation to support their road to recovery.

In the meantime, keep speaking out against violence and in support of democracy. The election might be over, but the fight to keep each other and our country safe is far from finished. This week reminded me of that again -- and reminded me to hold my loved ones a little tighter in my heart.
