Today, all across America and all over the world millions of people are taking to the streets to demand action on the moral imperative of addressing the climate crisis.

Now, our campaign has released the boldest and most comprehensive climate change plan in the history of the United States.

But we must do more…

So we have asked our supporters to join in the youth-led climate strike rallies happening all across the country. I joined one myself in Greensboro, North Carolina.

And we are asking people to participate because the truth of the matter is that change never happens from the top on down. It always happens from the bottom on up.

No real change in American history, not the labor movement, the civil rights movement, the women's movement, the gay rights movement, the environmental movement or any other movement has ever had success without grassroots activism, without millions of people engaged in the struggle for justice.

And that is especially true in this fight. Because our plan to save the planet will be difficult enough on its own. It will be even more so because of the amount of money the fossil fuel industry will spend to protect the profits they make from destroying our planet.

But here is what I believe:

If we stand together, we can end the fossil fuel era that has brought us to the brink of an unprecedented disaster.

If we stand together, we can transform our energy system and create 20 million good-paying jobs in the process.

If we stand together, we can create an economy free of carbon emissions.

If we stand together, there is nothing, nothing, nothing that we cannot accomplish.

So today, I want to ask you to do two things:

First, join one of the climate strike rallies happening in your community this week.

Next, I want you to send a message that you support our plan to fight climate change — the boldest and most progressive of any in this race:

Sign my petition — tell the other candidates in this race you support our Green New Deal — the boldest and most progressive plan ever released to fight climate change.

Make no mistake. Failure is not an option. Unless we take the action necessary to save our planet and reverse climate change, our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are going to look back on this period in history and ask a very simple question: Where were they? Why didn't the United States of America, the most powerful nation on earth, lead the international community in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and preventing the devastating damage that the scientific community was sure would come?

So thank you for making your voice heard — this week, especially.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders
