John,
On Dec. 14, 2012, my 8-year-old son, Jake, thought he heard metal chairs crashing over the intercom at Sandy Hook Elementary.
One day, he'll process that the sound he heard was actually gunfire – the sound of his baby brother and best friend, Dylan, being murdered in his first-grade classroom.
I know Jake thinks about what he could have done to save Dylan. He once told me he wanted to be an inventor. When I asked what he would invent, he immediately answered, "A time machine, so I can go back and change things, so they don't happen."
I don't want another child to have to listen as their sibling is shot to death. I don't want another child to have to agonize over what they could have done differently so their baby brother would still be alive.
So even though this week is incredibly difficult for me, I'm pushing through and putting everything into making sure we can ramp up our work to protect children from gun violence. But right now, we're still very short of our $750,000 goal and only have until Sunday to get back on track. I cannot bear the thought of another sister or brother like Jake feeling like we failed them, so please: Can I count on you to donate now to help close the gap?
Please rush a tax-deductible gift of $10, or as much as you can, to Sandy Hook Promise right now. Protecting more children from gun violence depends on your immediate donation before our Sunday deadline.

Over the years, I've replayed what I could have done differently that day, too. What if we'd never moved to Connecticut? What if I had just kept my boys home from school that day?
But I can't change what happened. My beautiful butterfly Dylan is gone forever. All I can do is work every day to prevent future tragedies.
I will never give up on my mission to build a legacy for Dylan by protecting other children like my surviving son – my hero, Jake – from gun violence. And I am so, so grateful to have you by my side.
With love,
Nicole Hockley (Dylan's mom)
