This has been a tough year. As the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic continues
to surge, we are all worried about the future.
Whether you’re working from home or in your community, self-isolating or caring
for others, uncertainty has changed life as you kenw it. But despite this,
you’ve shown up time and again this year to take action in solidarity with people
around the world demanding human rights and justice for all.
You showed up yesterday, International Human Rights Day, as part of an
inspiring, global wave of solidarity for Write for Rights ‒ the world’s biggest
human rights event ‒ to take urgent action in support of people whose human
rights have been denied.
You’ve been there for healthcare workers facing crackdowns for raising safety
concerns in Russia. For activists censored in China for speaking up about the
virus. For refugees trapped at borders due to lockdown measures in East Africa.
Some governments have tried to use this global crisis to hide their human rights
violations. But you wouldn’t let them — because you’re a part of this powerful
movement of people determined never to give in to fear or lose hope.

John, this year has been unlike any other. Despite the
challenges we’ve faced, your determination, and the relentless pressure of this
community means we have also had a lot to celebrate this year.
* Sierra Leone’s government overturned the ban preventing pregnant girls from
attending school and sitting exams, following calls and successful litigation by Amnesty
International and partner organizations. The ban had been in place for nearly
five years, depriving many young women of their right to an education.
* Prisoners of conscience have been released and are now back with their families,
in Cuba, Palestine, Russia, Iran,
Myanmar and elsewhere, thanks to hundreds of thousands of people like you
taking action.
* Here in Canada, the Federal Court has sided with Amnesty and others, telling
the government it’s unconstitutional to continue turning
refugees away and back to the US under the Safe Third Country Agreement.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. I am in awe and deeply inspired by what
we’ve been able to achieve together this year. When thousands of us write letters
and tweets, send emails, and make phone calls, we become unstoppable.
This is the power of collective action. It doesn’t work without each one of us.
