Friend,
Fani has been a member of our East Harlem chapter since 2018. She was working as a babysitter while her husband delivered for a restaurant, supporting their three children. But in March, they both contracted the virus and lost their jobs, and they haven’t been able to pay rent since.
What savings they had was used for food, and in October, the court notified them that they owed about $10,000 in rent. Fani and her husband are among the tens of thousands of tenants in New York City whose landlords have begun eviction proceedings, and who are organizing every day to cancel rent.
After shelter in place went into effect, our neighborhood chapters moved quickly to virtual spaces to continue organizing and building our base that was growing by the minute due to the pandemic impacting so many people’s livelihoods. We know that we can win bigger results by coming together than by only looking out for ourselves.
Member leaders like Fani have been active, speaking out on behalf of struggling tenants and undocumented workers excluded from federal aid, reaching out to their neighbors who are experiencing similar issues.
Thank you for fighting with us,
Gina DeJesus
