Hi Reader,

Investigative journalism, the kind we do here at ProPublica, is difficult for many newsrooms. Time-consuming and expensive, it’s often the first kind of reporting to be cut when money is tight. And it’s no secret that newsrooms have been facing difficulties for a long time.

But investigative journalism is also one of the most powerful tools we have to hold our government institutions, including law enforcement, accountable. During this summer’s protests against police brutality, ProPublica collected 68 videos of apparent instances of police officers escalating violence during protests so that we could keep track of the discipline, or lack of it, in each case. And after New York state repealed a law that kept police disciplinary records secret, ProPublica obtained records from the civilian review board that investigates claims by the public about NYPD officers, and created a searchable database of these records, spanning from 1985-2020. Just this week we published a deep-dive into the NYPD that revealed that undercover cops, incentivized by overtime pay, are conducting frequently unjust sting operations that overwhelmingly target people of color.

Investigations like these are funded by the tens of thousands of donations we receive each year from readers like you, who know the important role journalism plays in holding those in power accountable. Join us today with a donation of any amount, and help ProPublica ensure that we have the resources and financial stability we need to keep doing this work into 2021. <[link removed]>

We’ve got dozens of stories brewing all over the country, on subjects from the pandemic, to racial justice, to climate change and much more. Donate today and help pay for journalism that shines a light on injustice and betrayals of the public trust. <[link removed]> We need strong, nonpartisan, accountability journalism more now than ever before.

Thanks so much, Jill Shepherd Proud ProPublican <[link removed]>
