Smiles
When Steely Dan hit the stage on the Late Show with David Letterman in ’95 it was the first time they’d appeared on television in 20 years. I remember it so well. It was a stunning performance. We never, ever, saw musicianship like this on television during that era.
The richness and precision of their sound, the tightness and professionalism of the band, and the seriousness of it all was riveting. This clip doesn’t include Letterman’s skittish introduction, but if you saw it you could tell that Dave was authentically nervous and that Letterman bandleader Paul Schaffer was also on pins and needles. After all, these weren’t regular rock stars, this was Steely Dan, and they knew they were hosting something special. Fagan sporting a black leather blazer, and Becker clad in a jazzy unconstructed suit look perfect, convey a stone cold seriousness and a New York cool that is undeniable. I’ll never get over this performance. It’s one for the ages: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NdYkxd0U-c. |
