My name is Teryn Shipman, I am a self-declared Black girl who has a lot to say, and I am Rock the Vote’s State Coordinator here in Georgia. When I last wrote to you in July, I talked about the impact of voter suppression in my state. Since then, we have witnessed young people shaping our nation despite the significant obstacles they faced voting in the 2020 Election. Here in the Peach State, we know what it means to organize, but with more power-building comes more attempts at suppression. 

Even with multiple recounts and legal challenges, the results of last month’s election are clear. Young folks – especially young Black folks, turned out to vote in numbers so high that Georgia is just weeks away from a runoff election for not one but TWO Senate seats. Our work is far from over. With early voting beginning on December 14th and over 23,000 potential new voters since the General Election, there is still work to do!

This month Rock the Vote has shifted its end-of-year focus to Georgia, where I am working to engage, register, and mobilize young voters in this runoff election. Their goal is to raise $50,000 to support this critical work, and they’re asking for our help.
