Tell Congress: We need cash relief to survive this crisis!
Dear John:
We just got a terrible jobs report, with a massive number of people who just submitted first-time unemployment claims. According to The Washington Post, “more than 20 million people are on some form of unemployment assistance,” and as aid runs out, the result “is a growing subset of Americans who are stealing food to survive.”
And right now, while millions of people are suffering, the COVID-19 relief bill being negotiated in Congress still might provide NO cash payment to people to help them survive.
As Congresswoman-elect Cori Bush said, emergency cash payments aren’t “stimulus checks.” They’re survival checks. Tell Congress: the next COVID-19 bill MUST include a survival check!
This country is in the middle of a crushing economic disaster. Twenty-six million people say they do not have enough to eat. One third of adults are at least somewhat likely to be evicted or foreclosed on in the next two months.
Without cash assistance, people are going to lose their homes and starve in the richest country on Earth–a country where billionaires have increased their wealth by almost a trillion dollars since the pandemic began.
We need survival checks. We need Congress to deliver. Tell your legislators to act.
In solidarity,
