John,
Everyone said that 2018 was the “Year of the Woman” in politics across the country and Oklahoma Democrats did not disappoint. We had some historic victories flipping legislative seats, not to mention electing the first Democratic woman to represent the Fifth Congressional District. However, I argue that 2019 is the Year of the Oklahoma Democratic Woman.
You may not know that for the first time in history, a majority of the top leadership positions across the state in our party are held by women. At this year’s convention, you elected me as the very first African American woman to lead the State Party and I am proud to have joined the ranks of strong, passionate women who have stepped up to help lead this Party in the coming years. Just take a look at this:
State Party Chair, Woman. Highest Elected Democrat, Woman. House and Senate Leadership, Women. The two largest counties in Oklahoma are Chaired by Women. Young Democrats of Oklahoma, Stonewall Democrats, Federation of Democratic Women, Disability Federation, Latinx Federation, and African American Federation -- all lead by Women. And to top it off, now a majority of county leadership positions are held by Women.
It is clear that Oklahoma Democrats have much to celebrate. However, 2019 is not a grace period. In order to defend the Fifth Congressional District and protect down-ballot Democrats, we must prepare for 2020 now.
Preparation is not about conversations; it is about taking action. It is about training, recruitment, and investing in tools that can provide results in 2020.
Together we can build on our successes of 2018. I hope you will join us.
