This huge win wouldn't have been possible without you? ? ? ? Friend ? I am so thrilled to share this news:
For years now Indigenous leaders, LCV and other environmental groups, and supporters like you called on every major U.S. bank to divest from Arctic drilling.
Earlier this year, we convinced Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Citigroup to pull their funding. Now, after keeping the pressure up for months, Bank of America has finally signed on.
Bank of America is the last major U.S. bank to publicly commit to not finance Arctic drilling. This is a major victory for protecting the Arctic Refuge and for the Indigenous Gwich'in people, who call the Refuge "The Sacred Place Where Life Begins." Gwich'in culture, traditions, and community are deeply tied to the land and ecosystem ? and they're continuing to fight to protect the Refuge.
We have more work to do, and we hope you're ready to keep fighting too. With just weeks left in office, the Trump administration is racing towards a lease sale as soon as January that would open up the fragile ecosystem to the highest bidder. We need you to be ready to call on president-elect Biden to follow through on his commitments to permanently protect this pristine place. And we'll need your help in holding off Trump until Inauguration Day.
Our voices have and will continue to make it clear to any oil company that they will run serious financial, reputational, and regulatory risks if they purchase a lease and seek to drill in the Arctic Refuge. As companies contemplate submitting a bid, raising the capital to develop those leases, and receiving regulatory approvals from an incoming administration determined to protect the Refuge, our voices ? and how loud we collectively get ? can dramatically alter their calculations.
The stakes here are massive. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge not only threatens the ecosystem that the Gwich'in people depend on, it violates their rights and would alter their way of life forever. Any drilling in the Arctic Refuge would release more carbon pollution, at a time when we should be transitioning to a clean and equitable energy future.
So I'm asking you, friend, can you help us keep up the fight? Please make a donation to LCV today to continue this work ? [link removed]
We won't stop until the Arctic Refuge and the Gwich'in people's way of life is permanently protected. I know that we would not have gotten this far without you. Thank you for your resilience in this fight.
Sincerely,
