At the end of this month, Rebecca Isaacs will be leaving her position as Executive Director of Equality Federation. We, the Equality Federation team, want to take the opportunity to express gratitude for everything she has done to build Equality Federation into what it is today.
In 2010, the movement for LGBTQ equality looked quite different. Fewer than 10 states had legalized marriage for same-sex couples; bans on conversion therapy were virtually nonexistent in the states; and, only 12 states and D.C. explicitly prohibited discrimination against LGBTQ people in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Equality Federation had only three staff, a small budget, and a few programs.
The LGBTQ movement has changed dramatically since then, as has the Federation. With Rebecca’s leadership the organization has tripled the size of the staff and doubled the budget, creating programs that have increased LGBTQ civic participation, created coalitions to end the HIV epidemic, and built the leaders and the organizations working on the ground to win equality in the communities we call home.

Rebecca has been a strategic leader, thought partner, and friend. She had a vision for what Equality Federation could be and worked with the board, our members, and key stakeholders like you to make us the team we are today. We are going to miss her dedication, thoughtfulness, and humor as she was not only our fearless leader but to many a friend, confidant, and mentor.
Thank you Rebecca for believing in the power of the state-based movement for equality. For dedicating your time and energy to building this organization into what it is today. For sharing your wisdom and passion for justice with this team and our members across the country.
