Hi John,
Breast Cancer Action is the watchdog of the breast cancer movement. This October, we took that role to a new level with our Think Before You Pink® campaign, We Can’t Be Pink’d: Say No to Pink Policies. We mobilized our amazing members to call out the administration and four federal agencies for their lack of leadership in addressing the breast cancer epidemic. While we achieved one important victory with the National Cancer Institute, our work must continue and we need your support.

There is reason to have hope.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) listened to the hundreds of BCAction members who called for providing information on the link between environmental exposures and breast cancer risk and has agreed to review and change their patient prevention webpage. The campaign was also featured in the recent Op-Ed “The National Cancer Institute needs to publish information about chemical exposure and cancer risk” by esteemed scientists Linda S. Birnbaum, PhD, and Margaret L. Kripke, PhD.

The country has a new, more progressive administration. For President-Elect Biden, addressing cancer is a priority and one of the issues he championed as Vice President. And Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris developed a great respect for science and the urgency to end cancer from her mother, Dr. Shyamala Harris, who was a groundbreaking breast cancer researcher and strong supporter of Breast Cancer Action.

But our work is not done. Biden and Harris have not committed to protecting our most vulnerable communities by ending fracking. And there is still so much to be done to ensure that the NCI fulfills its promise by providing complete information to researchers, health providers, the general public and, yes, our elected officials, on the link between environmental exposures and breast cancer risk.

Now, more than ever, we need a watchdog that will hold all of our leaders accountable in order to build a world where our lives and communities are not threatened by breast cancer. And I promise that, with your year-end gift Breast Cancer Action will continue to be that organization. Thank you for your support.

In solidarity,

Marj Plumb
Interim Executive Director
