I’m a queer artist from Turkey, where it was difficult for me because LGBTQ people lack recognition or protection there. It was hard to live fully when I was more concerned about protecting my life than expressing to the world who I am. I embrace my queer identity, and after moving to New York, I was desperately looking for a way to become more deeply involved in the community―and I found The Center!

Make A Holiday Gift

Before the pandemic, I frequently attended discussion groups at The Center and marched in my first NYC Pride. This summer in quarantine, wanting to find a way to connect and to give back, I jumped at the chance to participate in The Center’s inaugural year of the #275Challenge. This initiative encouraged people to use their talents to raise awareness and funds on behalf of The Center. I decided to sketch 275 people to illustrate the beauty of our diversity.

Throughout my #275Challenge I knew I was doing something important. It was a perfect opportunity not only to support The Center, but for me to share a message of equality. My hope was that if my art could touch at least one person and help them feel that they belong, then it was more than worth doing. Where there is hope, there is life.

Proudly,

Su
