"If you're missing someone, they didn't survive."

I'll never forget hearing these terrible words on Dec. 14, 2012, John. They still haunt me.

When I learned there had been a shooting at my sweet little Daniel's school, I quickly drove to Sandy Hook Elementary.

As I waited with other families at the nearby firehouse, I started hearing reports that an educator had been injured. I was preparing myself for how I'd talk to Daniel about the traumatic experience once he was back home. We still had hope then that all of our kids were OK.

Even when we learned 20 children had been killed, we saw the list of people who were missing a loved one and counted 24 names – so we still had hope our little Daniel was safe.

When the governor said those seven words, that hope was ripped away.

Monday marks eight years since Daniel was murdered. I wouldn't wish this never-ending agony on anyone, so I'll do whatever it takes to prevent other parents from losing a child to gun violence.

That's why we need to raise $750,000 before Dec. 14 to make sure we can work fast enough to prevent the next tragedy before it happens, but we're still falling very short. Please, will you give now to honor Daniel and help protect children from gun violence next year?

Please rush a tax-deductible donation of $10, or as much as you can, to Sandy Hook Promise right now so we can keep doing everything possible to protect children from gun violence.

Each day, each year further from life with my sweet little Daniel is excruciatingly hard. It's especially difficult during this time of year, when I mark the last day I hugged him and relive the nightmare of his murder over and over again. But I've never given up, and I never will.

I'll never stop, because it's how I honor Daniel and his gentle, generous, compassionate spirit. Life without him will never get easier. But because of you, our hope will never be broken. Together, we are turning tragedy into transformation, and for that, I'm so grateful.
