Friend, as Donald Trump’s presidency comes to a close, here’s something I implore you to keep in mind:
The damage that he has done to our democracy -- and the broken systems that put him in the White House -- won't just disappear on January 20th.
So if you believe, as I do, that we need a democracy that’s truly free and fair for everyone -- then I must alert you that our work for lasting change that’ll strengthen our democracy is just beginning.
There’s no denying that Trump’s presidency has divided us -- and weakened Americans’ faith in our democratic institutions. Look no further than the rancor on social media -- driven by the president himself -- that has left some partisans disputing the election results without a shred of evidence.
Frankly, as fraught as the political environment is right now, I’m optimistic. Common Cause has fought for 50 years for a stronger, fairer, and more accountable democracy. We’ve succeeded before Trump stepped foot in the Oval Office -- and with your support, we’ll keep fighting and winning long after he’s gone.
Step one in this renewed fight: each of us must immediately get to work to repair the damage done by the Trump administration -- and start building the infrastructure for a democracy that truly works for all of us.
Here’s a glimpse of what that’ll look like in the coming weeks and months:
- We’re already in conversation with the incoming Biden-Harris administration, pressuring them to push an ambitious agenda through the executive branch -- and deliver immediate results to protect voters, rebuild our institutions, and restore ethics and accountability in the White House.
- We’ve also begun mobilizing our 1.5 million members to demand that Congress pass the For the People Act -- a groundbreaking bill make sure We the People call the shots in our government -- and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act -- which will uphold the civil rights hero’s legacy by blocking discriminatory voting measures before they can hurt voters.
- We’re scaling up the Social Media Monitoring operation that we built for the 2020 election to keep tabs on anti-voter disinformation -- and stop baseless lies about vote-by-mail and other reforms from being used to roll back voting rights during next year’s legislative sessions.
- And, we must remain vigilant against the threat of a dangerous Article V convention -- the far right’s shadowy effort to rewrite our U.S. Constitution. We fully expect this right-wing plot to come back with a vengeance, given the results of this year’s election.
Friend, I know Common Cause members like you are in this fight for the long haul. You show up and speak out day after day because you understand that the problems we must solve run deeper than Donald Trump -- and that our movement must continue beyond his presidency.
So, I'm asking if you'll reaffirm your commitment to our democracy work with a Year End Contribution today. Your donation will help fuel our important work as we mobilize together to rebuild and strengthen our democracy in the post-Trump era.
Yes, I'll Chip In $5!
Friend, after such a long and emotional year, I hope you have a restful and relaxing holiday season.
But I also hope that in the new year, you will be ready to hit the ground running as we tackle the challenges and opportunities that our democracy faces.
As long as eligible voters are deliberately and cynically kept from the ballot box… as long as politicians can put themselves above the law... and as long as Big Money and a broken Electoral College can put a candidate like Trump in the White House, we must keep pushing. We must fight on.
I hope you’ll recommit to this all-important work today. As we prepare for the new year and the battles to come, we’re counting on you.
Thanks for all you do and all my best for the holidays,
Karen Hobert Flynn, President
and the team at Common Cause
