Hi there,
friend,
—
Today, Earth Island Journal is launching its year-end member drive. To be honest, asking for money isn’t fun. I’m a journalist, not a fundraiser nor a salesperson. However, as a nonprofit newsroom, contributions from our readers help us do the hard work of finding and reporting stories — and making those stories available to everyone, without a paywall.
Earth Island Journal doesn’t have a paywall because our mission is to inform, educate, and inspire action. If you believe in the work we do, please consider making a tax-deductible year-end donation to our Green Journalism Fund.
Yes! I'll support the Green Journalism Fund! ([link removed])
Over these last few years, we’ve seen how fraglie democracy is, and how shamelessly cronyism exploits the system to benefit the few to the detriment of many. However, we’ve also seen that one of our most effective weapons against well-funded, powerful interests is the strength of community.
In this challenging year, Earth Island Journal covered some incredible stories of the power of community.
* The Town that Refuses to Drown ([link removed]) tells the story of the 400 people of Temaca, Mexico who have stood up to eight governors in two different states and the President of Mexico and pushed for the dismantling of a mega-dam that would flood their homes if completed.
* A network of farmers in the US Midwest have A Big Idea ([link removed]) : sharing research and working together to foster more environmentally sound practices with competitive yields.
* Amid the world’s longest-running ethnic insurgency, Indigenous Karen people in Myanmar have initiated a grassroots Revolutionary Forest ([link removed]) conservation project that advances a vision for peace and self-determination.
When you support Earth Island Journal, you are joining our small community that boasts a big voice. More importantly your donations fund our reporting on these incredible stories of communities fighting to preserve the natural spaces that sustain us and the species that enrich our lives. It takes the contributions of many to stand up against the powerful few.
We'd love to have you in our community. Won't you join us?
Regards,
Maureen Nandini Mitra
